Public records indicate that millions of dollars donated to the Obama Foundation were later routed to a progressive funding network that has supported groups involved in anti-Israel activism. Federal tax filings show the foundation transferred $2 million to the Tides Foundation in 2022 and 2023. The funds were designated to support community organizations working to reduce violence. Tides, which also receives donations from George Soros, operates as a fiscal sponsor for groups not registered as independent charities and is currently under review by the House Ways and Means Committee.
Lawmakers are examining Tides’ role in directing funds to organizations such as the Adalah Justice Project, Samidoun, and the People’s Forum. These organizations have been linked to demonstrations and student encampments at major universities that generated national controversy. The Obama Foundation said the money was distributed to more than 50 organizations nationwide to address rising summer violence and to create safe spaces for young people. According to the foundation, Tides handled administrative grant processing while another nonprofit managed the application process.
The disclosures come as the Justice Department has ordered several U.S. attorneys’ offices to draft plans for potential investigations into Soros’ Open Society Foundation. The directive outlines possible criminal charges and follows public pressure from President Donald Trump, who has accused Soros-backed groups of fueling unrest and property destruction. Justice Department officials say any investigation would prioritize public safety and enforcement of federal law.
