The GOP-controlled House passed a bill requiring the federal government to detain and deport any illegal immigrant who assaults a police officer, despite opposition from most Democrats. The measure, known as the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act, passed 265–148, with 54 Democrats joining Republicans. Rep. Jeff Van Drew, the bill’s sponsor, argued that anyone in the country illegally who attacks law enforcement “shows zero respect for our rule of law” and should not remain in the United States. The legislation also creates a new category of inadmissibility targeting migrants accused of assaulting police. After the vote, GOP Whip Tom Emmer accused Democrats of siding against law enforcement.
A new CNN poll shows Republicans maintaining a significant advantage over Democrats on economic issues, surprising CNN analyst Harry Enten. Despite months of warnings from Democrats about Trump’s tariff policies, voters continue to trust Republicans more on handling the economy. Enten noted that Republicans previously held an 11-point lead in November 2023; as of the latest poll, they still lead by eight points. He expressed shock that Democrats have not gained ground despite recession concerns, volatile markets, and public opposition to tariffs.
Additional polling from Reuters/Ipsos mirrored the trend, showing Republicans expanding their advantage on economic planning from nine points in May 2024 to twelve points in May 2025. Enten said this widening gap highlights the Democrats’ deepening economic credibility problem. He emphasized that Republicans also maintain a strong advantage with middle-class voters, a crucial group for national elections.
