CHAOS IN DC: United States Senate Votes 51-44 on Controv…

California’s Democratic leadership is preparing to sue the federal government after the Republican-controlled Senate voted to overturn Biden-era waivers that allowed the state to enforce its own strict emissions and electric vehicle standards. The vote reversed an EPA decision granting California authority to phase out gas-powered vehicles by 2035. Gov. Gavin Newsom blasted the move as “illegal,” accusing Republicans of bypassing Senate procedure and undermining decades of precedent. Attorney General Rob Bonta echoed the criticism, arguing that using the Congressional Review Act to target California’s waivers is an unlawful, partisan attempt to roll back environmental protections. Several Democratic senators, including Adam Schiff, Chuck Schumer, and Martin Heinrich, warned that the vote sets a dangerous precedent that could allow Congress to overturn a wide range of agency decisions nationwide.

Democrats argued that Republicans’ action threatens the regulatory framework that governs energy, environmental protection, and federal permitting. Heinrich cautioned that overturning California’s Clean Air Act waivers could lead to chaos, higher energy costs, and delays across nearly all federal projects. Schumer accused Republicans of “going nuclear” by sidestepping the filibuster, insisting the move will have long-term consequences. Schiff said the move effectively opens a procedural loophole that could be exploited again to benefit industry interests.

Republicans dismissed the criticism, noting that Democrats have previously supported weakening or eliminating the filibuster themselves. Senate Majority Leader John Thune characterized the dispute as a narrow issue about the Government Accountability Office’s authority to define regulatory rules. Meanwhile, GOP Sen. John Barrasso condemned California’s EV mandates as unrealistic and harmful to rural communities, arguing that forcing a rapid transition to electric vehicles threatens consumer choice and ignores current market realities.
